Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. After calling dispatch, how long will it take for a cab to pick me up?

A. Pick-ups most often take 10 minutes or under.

Q. How much is it going to cost me to take a cab?

A. The first 77 metres will cost $3.05, with each subsequent kilometre after that costing $1.73. Idle time at traffic lights or in traffic costs approximately $0.52 per minute. As a general rule of thumb, cab rides within the City of Vancouver rarely rise above $25.00.

Q. Can I ask my driver to switch radio stations or open the window?

A. Absolutely. The driver is there to serve you, the customer, making your requests regarding radio stations, heat, air conditioning, windows, seat adjustments or route to your destination a directive that must be followed. If you ever experience anything other than compliance, please feel free to use our Customer Care section of our website or call (604) 681-3201 to make your voice heard.

Q. Are drivers able to speak on the phone while driving?

A. Whether by bluetooth or not, the company policy of Black Top & Checker Cabs is that no driver should speak on the phone while driving.

Q. I have lost something in one of your cabs. How can I check if it has been recovered?

A. Please call our corporate offices at (604) 681-3201 and press “0” to speak to Teri-Lynn, who can check to see if anything has been turned in. Noting the cab number, time of day and/or pick-up destination will be helpful in seeking out your item.

Q. What are the qualifications of your drivers?

A. Each of our drivers have taken the Taxi-Host Level I and II program from the Justice Institute of B.C. The program teaches drivers not only the fundamentals of finesse behind driving a cab, but also about how to properly tend to the elderly and the disabled. All drivers are also required to pass a Vancouver Police background check in order to receive the required city-issued Chauffeurs Permit. Finally, all operators are taught and tested on the geography of Metro Vancouver, and the fastest routes to get to all destinations.

Q. Is using a credit card acceptable for all types of rides and situations?

A. There are no restrictions when it comes to payment. Black Top & Checker Cabs accepts all major credit cards and of course cash, and it is up to the customer to determine which method is most convenient for them.

Q. How many people can taxis carry?

A. Taxis have four seatbelts, and thus is able to carry four passengers. For our vans (which must be specially requested from dispatch if needed), four passengers plus one passenger in a wheelchair can be accommodated.
